Location

The small suburb of Rožat is located in a bay about five km away from Dubrovnik. This area called Rijeka Dubrovačka, which means the river of Dubrovnik, is with its hinterland one of the most fertile parts of this region and counts the most sources of this region. So was the municipal drinking water in the late Middle Age directed over a complex aqueduct from the source in the place Šumet straight into the Onofrio fountain of the old town. Today Dubrovnik is supplied with water from the karstic spring of the Ombla, with only 20 m of length the shortest river in Europe.

This picturesque area with its clean water and fresh air was appreciated early as a recreation and entertainment place, and so had rich Ragusan patricians (Ragusa former name of Dubrovnik) established already during the Renaissance their summer residences here. Some of those wonderful buildings are preserved until today.

The former fishing village Rožat (derived from lt. rosetum, rose hedge, -garden) is beside its source and the river Ombla also very known for its church, Velika Gospa or Marija od Uznesenja, which sits enthroned above it. Popularly it is said that the foundation was already laid in the year 955, but mentioned in written form is the church from 1123. The community Rožat is led by a Franciscan order, with monastery and church (Marija od Pohođenja) from the late 14th century are situated at the river bank of the Ombla.

It is a quiet residential area, which invites to long walks along the river bank along the bay. The area around the Ombla is protected nature and hides numerous animal species living in water, reeds and caves.

You will find on this route also some restaurants, among others at the opposite side ACI Marina of Dubrovnik, where little holiday-makers can enjoy the playground and swimming pool. The nearest beach is located in the village Štikovica, about 2 km away and can only be reached by car.

In Rožat you live far away from the hustle and yet you are in shortest time in the midst of events.
